Bee Gees' 1971 hit was written by Robin and Barry Gibb (in 2009 the third brother Maurice was finally given co-write credits), and they originally offered the song to Andy Williams. For some mysterious reason Williams declined it, and Bee Gees recorded it themselves. Wise move as it became their first number one hit in America. And what a great song it is! "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" is a love song for the ages, posing eternal questions like "how can you stop the rain from falling?" and "how can you stop the sun from shining?" - good questions indeed.
